Whether you’re a bridesmaid, a festival goer, or a romantic at heart, knowing how to make a flower crown will go a long way in your arsenal of hairstyles and crafty talents. Flower crown making is a fun and creative way to add a personal touch to any special occasion, from Ren Faires to photoshoots and events. In our simple flower crown DIY, you’ll learn how to choose the right materials, craft a beautiful crown, and make it last.

Finding The Right Flowers For Your Crown

To create a pretty floral wreath for your hair, you’ll want to use fresh flowers. After all, natural blooms are stunning on their own, and they’re even more beautiful when grouped together in a floral headpiece. The key to a perfect flower crown is choosing blossoms that have the durability to last through your event. Choose flowers with sturdy stems, like roses, chrysanthemums, and baby’s breath. These flowers are hardy and won’t wilt quickly, which is important! Don’t forget to add some smaller filler flowers along with a few sprigs of greenery to give your crown a fuller, more textured look.

    Our 6-Step Flower Crown Tutorial

Ready to make an easy flower crown? Follow the instructions in this flower crown how-to so that you can create a beautiful headpiece that suits your style.

    Materials needed:

    • Floral wire (regular or fabric-coated)
    • Floral tape (if using regular floral wire)
    • Scissors or floral shears
    • Fresh flowers
    • Greenery
    • Measuring tape
    • Ribbon (optional!)

    Build your base

Cut the wire to the length needed to wrap around your head. Make sure to leave an extra inch or two at both ends to secure the crown once it’s complete. If you’re not using fabric-coated wire, then you’ll need to wrap the floral wire with floral tape. This not only covers the wire completely, but it will also prevent any sharp edges from poking through.

    Fit and measure

Wrap the prepared wire around your head where you want the crown to sit. Make sure it feels comfortable and fits snugly but not too tightly. Twist the ends of the wire together to form a circle, and then wrap any excess wire around the base to secure it.

    Cut your flowers

Next, cut your flowers to the desired length, leaving about two to three inches of stem below the bloom. This will give you enough stem to attach the flower securely to the wire base. Be sure to remove any excess leaves or thorns from the stems to keep your crown looking neat and tidy.

    Secure the stems

Take a flower and place it against the wire frame. Use a small piece of floral tape to wrap around the stem and the wire, securing the flower in place. Repeat this process with the rest of your flowers. Feel free to overlap the flowers slightly if you want a lush, full look. On the other hand, you can alternate between flowers and greenery for more of a natural, textured crown.

    Form the crown

Once all of your flowers and greenery are securely attached, check the crown for any gaps or uneven sections. Adjust the flowers as needed to create a balanced look. Gently bend the wire to form a smooth circle that sits comfortably on your head. If desired, you can add a ribbon to the back of the crown for a soft, pretty touch.

    Add filler flowers

To complete your flower crown, add some filler flowers or small greenery sprigs in between the larger blooms. This will help fill in any gaps and add more dimension to your crown. Secure these smaller pieces with floral tape, just as you did with the larger flowers.

If you’re not planning to wear your flower crown immediately, then you need to find a way to keep it fresh! The best way is the old pro’s trick: refrigeration. Store your flower crown in the fridge inside of a plastic bag or container with a damp paper towel to maintain moisture. This will help prevent wilting so that your crown looks beautiful when it’s time to wear it.
